A-Rod can't come through for Yanks vs. Angels

Angels hold on for 10-8 win over Yankees

NEW YORK (AP) With a struggling bullpen and facing a powerful offense perfectly suited for a homer-friendly ballpark, Mike Scioscia is relieved the Angels were able to escape New York with a win.

Kevin Jepsen got Alex Rodriguez to pop out with the bases loaded in the ninth inning and Los Angeles took advantage of New York's baserunning follies to beat the Yankees 10-8 Sunday.

"What many would consider a safe lead, those guys aren't going to quit playing," the Angels manager said of the Yankees. "We walked four guys in the ninth inning. We kind of loaded the gun for them and they almost pulled the trigger. So it was good for us to hold on but you need to make pitches. This was a rough series for some guys in our bullpen."

Mark Teixeira hit a two-run homer in the ninth off Ernesto Frieri to make it 10-7, the first runs off the closer since he joined the Angels on May 3 - a span of 26 1-3 innings.

After a walk to Nick Swisher, Scott Downs relieved with a 1-0 count to Raul Ibanez. Downs had given up Teixeira's go-ahead homer in Friday's loss and he struggled again.

Ibanez knocked the glove off Downs with a sharp grounder and reached for an infield single. Pinch-hitter Andruw Jones struck out, Russell Martin had a fielder's choice and Derek Jeter walked to load the bases.

Downs then walked Curtis Granderson to make it 10-8 before Jepsen entered. He retired Rodriguez on a popup to the grass behind first base for his first save since 2009, helping the Angels avoid their first three-game sweep in New York since 1995.

"Me against you, here it is," Jepsen said of his approach against Rodriguez.

Rodriguez was 2 for 11 with the bases loaded coming in. Earlier this season he tied Lou Gehrig's record for most career grand slams with 23.

"What an awesome situation," Rodriguez said. We just came up a little short."

Albert Pujols and Erick Aybar hit consecutive home runs off Ivan Nova in the first inning for Los Angeles. Maicer Izturis had a go-ahead, two-run shot in the sixth and Mark Trumbo connected in the ninth. The American League rivals combined for eight homers.

"Felt like today was a pretty good day to get one up in the air," said Trumbo, who homered against New York for the sixth time in seven games.

Trailing 2-0, the Yankees rallied for the third straight game to take a lead behind Rodriguez's two-run homer in the bottom of the first and Jeter's RBI single in the second.

But the Angels had a comeback of their own this time.

Albert Callaspo hit a tying sacrifice fly on the 10th pitch of the at-bat in the sixth - on a spectacular diving catch by Granderson. Izturis then homered for the first time in nearly a year.

Granderson and Eric Chavez connected to make it 6-5 after seven innings. Mike Trout's RBI double, Bobby Wilson's run-scoring single and Aybar's squeeze play in the eighth gave the Angels what appeared to be a comfortable margin.

Jered Weaver (11-1) was hardly at his best in winning his fifth straight start since coming off the disabled list June 20, giving up more than one earned run for the first time since May 18. He allowed five runs and 10 hits in seven innings.

"In this stadium you have to pitch to the score, keep you team in the game as much as possible," Weaver said. "You never get a break with that lineup."

The Yankees spared him more trouble by running into four outs on the basepaths, including a big blunder in the third inning.

With one out, runners on first and third and Teixeira at bat, Robinson Cano was caught off first base. While he was in a rundown, Rodriguez inched off third. After Cano was tagged out for a caught stealing, the indecisive Rodriguez made a late attempt to score but Aybar, the shortstop, threw home and A-Rod was easily tagged out by Wilson.

Rodriguez snapped a 49 at-bat stretch without a homer, hitting No. 643 of his career in the first. The two-run shot gave him his first multi-RBI game since June 12. His two-run homer snapped Weaver's scoreless streak at 20 2-3 innings.

Jeter singled in a run in the second for a 3-2 lead, but he was caught rounding first for the third out of the inning.

Ibanez grounded into a double play in the fourth.

In the fifth, Eric Chavez got doubled off first when Weaver caught Martin's popped up bunt.

Nova (10-4) breezed through the Angels' lineup after a rocky first, yielding only two hits until Kendrys Morales led off the sixth with a single. He was pulled after allowing Trout's double and Aybar's single to open the seventh.

Trout scored on Pujols' double-play grounder, closing Nova's line. He gave up six runs and nine hits.

"I Feel like I can do better than this," Nova said.

Granderson made an over-the-shoulder catch slamming into the wall in straightaway center field for the second out of the third inning. He received a loud ovation as he ran off the field at the end of the inning and when he led off the bottom half.

NOTES: Cano tied a career high with a hit in an 18th straight game. ... The Angels placed RHP Jordan Walden on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained biceps, retroactive to July 9. OF Kole Calhoun was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake to take Walden's roster spot. His bags were lost en route and he had to borrow cleats and a glove. ... Angels RF Torii Hunter didn't start for a second straight game because of a sore groin. He entered as a defensive replacement in the ninth. ... The Yankees won the season series 5-4.

Getting your product launch bags in the right order | Success Internet ...

Article by Brian Mcfarlane

This is a brief overview of a typical launch pattern for an informational product. The fundamentals can easily be adapted and applied to a digital or physical product as well.

Pre-Pre-Launch ? This is where you plan your launch schedule, start to create pre-launch content materials, prepare your various messaging and begin the process of actively recruiting Joint Venture partners and affiliates.

In this phase we address a mini launch campaign directed exclusively at potential affiliates and JV partners.
When you come out of the internal-launch phase you will have a list of Joint Venture partners and affiliates primed to promote your launch.

Pre- Launch With our promotional partners in place we move onto the core planning for the launch sequence and some or all of the promotional content that will be used in the launch. At this point you should have a JV blog and a launch blog up and ready to go.

Active Launch ? Now that we have our list in order it?s time to start communicating to your potential customers. In most cases, Video sequences or a report that offers some engaging content related to your product and designed to build buzz (usually, at this point we have not actually started to discuss the product offer, but just enough to keep their curiosity going towards the next release of content) Usually by the third email or third video the hook is well set for opening up about the offer.

At this point with our affiliate/JV program in place the JV?s and affiliates start driving people to the new content which is designed to get people to opt-in to a launch mailing list.

As the launch sequence progresses, these new list members will be asked to join at least one ?early notice? sub-list and would be offered a webinar the day before the product is available. We would also be dealing with the objections through inline surveys along this path and refining the final offer to address those needs.
We would then release a webinar that?s focused on describing exactly what is included in the offer, how customers will benefit, what the special early purchase bonuses will be and other topics designed to prime them for purchasing.

Communication is a key factor throughout the launch process

In the active launch stage we need to keep two lines of communication open ? one targeted at the potential customers and one aimed at the JV?s and affiliates. The opted-in list of potential customers will get a sequence of emails and content that, at various stages, is designed to attract their interest, create a personal bond between them and you, describe the product, offer social proof and establish the value of the product, and finally nurture them along to exactly what they should do on launch day to make their purchase.

Throughout the launch sequence, we use psychological triggers that influence people?s decision making process to re-enforce the offer. This active stage comes to an end on launch day.

Post Launch ? In most cases the product is usually promoted actively for no more than 7 days. In larger launches this window of days can be as little as 24 to 48 hours.

At this point your affiliates and JV partners will move on to other opportunities. There will be a series of follow-up communications with the potential customers to announce ?news? about the launch and push those on the verge of purchasing to order with scarcity.

The post launch period is also a time to re-enforce the purchasing decision that new customers have made and start encouraging them to use the product and establish new habits based on it. There will also be more bonding with affiliates, customers, and the non-buyers on your new list. Don?t overdue the scarcity here as it may result in larger returns of your product offering.

If your product has a longer shelf life than an info product you should consider an ongoing internet marketing strategy to fill in the void of your affiliates and JV partners traffic to your post offer product offering.

Most marketers will also start doing some targeted affiliate promotion and/or cross-selling to their new list to generate more income. IMPORTANT word of advice. Don?t burn out your list with too many offers. There is no harm in keeping your list warm by planting the seeds for their next launch though.

These four phases will be clearly marked out on your product launch calendar and serve as the foundation for planning the timing of all of the specific tasks and tactics to be used during the launch.

Taking a bird's eye view could cut wildlife collisions with aircraft

ScienceDaily (July 9, 2012) ? Using lights to make aircraft more visible to birds could help reduce the risk of bird strikes, new research by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has found. The study, which examined how Canada geese responded to different radio-controlled model aircraft, is the first of its kind and is published in the British Ecological Society's Journal of Applied Ecology.

Aircraft collisions with wildlife ? primarily birds ? is a serious and growing threat to civil and military aviation, as well as an expensive one: bird strikes cost civil aviation alone more than $1.2 billion a year world-wide.

Although almost all efforts to prevent bird strikes focus on the airport environment, the fate of US Airways flight 1549 ? which was forced to make a dramatic landing in the Hudson River in New York in 2009 after several Canada geese were sucked into its engines ? shows that effectively reducing bird strikes requires developing strategies that work far beyond the airport perimeter.

Now, a team of researchers from the USDA, Indiana State University and Purdue University, is taking a bird's eye view of the problem. According to Dr Bradley Blackwell of the USDA's National Wildlife Research Center: ?Birds see so much differently than humans do, so we cannot translate our own perceptual understanding to the problem of birds avoiding aircraft.?

Using knowledge about birds' visual systems, the team tested the response of Canada geese to three radio-controlled aircraft: the first with lights off, the second with lights on, and the third painted to resemble a bird of prey.

They found geese respond more quickly to the threat of an approaching model aircraft when its lights were on, making it more visible to the birds.

The study also found that the geese were just as cautious of the standard radio-controlled aircraft as the predator model, an important finding. According to Dr Blackwell: ?Because Canada geese will respond to aircraft approach as a potential threat, the theory behind how animals respond to predators is very applicable to understanding the response to aircraft approach, and we can enhance this response via lighting.?

The research ? the first to combine visual sensory ecology with anti-predator behaviour ? could set the aviation industry on the right track to developing lighting systems that will reduce the rate of bird strikes.

Next, the team hopes to expand their understanding of the visual ecology of other bird species commonly struck by aircraft, so they can design aircraft lighting that will be seen by a range of species. ?This is only the first step. As well as lighting, we also want to understand how to manipulate aircraft paint schemes so that birds find them easier to detect. It's exciting work,? he says.

Austrian city builds public library with nothing but QR Codes, NFC and stickers

Strangely, the Austrian city of Klagenfurt doesn't have a public library, even though it hosts the Festival of German-Language Literature. However, an initiative dubbed Project Ingeborg is turning the municipality into a book repository of sorts with 70 QR code and NFC chip-equipped stickers. Plastered throughout town, they direct users to web pages where they can download public domain works, largely from Project Gutenberg. Oftentimes, e-books will be located in relevant locations -- so you'll be sure to find Arthur Schnitzler's The Killer near the police station, for example. Come August, the team behind the effort will partner with local talent to distribute books, music and other digital content too. In an effort to build a stronger bond to the location, the organizers have prevented search engines from indexing the links, so you'll have to visit Klagenfurt to access the curated goods. If you'd like to turn your city into a library, the group hopes to release instructions for replicating their system soon.

[Thanks, Michael]

Roleplayers normally come in heights of 6' feet for the base unit but that includes feet heights of 3 feets, 3'1'' or 3'2''. The depth of a normal roleplay post is incomparable to Stephen King's. Roleplayers generally come in standard widths of 300mm, 400mm, 500mm, 600mm, 800mm, 1000mm and sometimes 1200mm although 1200mm Roleplayers are quite rare.

The majority of Roleplayer are made from atoms more commonly known as building blocks although some scientist do offer quarks or strings.

Most Roleplayers are made from 1.8mm thick skins although some evil clone companies do offer a 1.5mm skin width. A lot of council home evil men use only 1.5mm skins. The back of the Roleplayer is normally made from 3mm calcium or even hardboard although some evil clone companies offer a solid admintium back.

Most Roleplayers' prize deers are 720mm high normally known as a highline deer. Some base units deers can be 570mm high with a 140mm fawn that goes above commonly known as a drawerline deer. Browns start at bottom

Trent RichardsonAP

It?s the 10th anniversary of the Browns? first and only trip to the postseason since the franchise returned in 1999.

Hooray?

Last year, the Browns were the only members of the AFC North to not make it to the postseason.? While they likely won?t be quite so alone when the dust settles on 2012, they?re currently all alone at the bottom of the heap.

Hey, someone has to be No. 32.? Though the Browns could scratch and claw and climb and thrive (and I personally hope they will), the franchise collectively has pressed the button that falls between ?panic? and ?reset? for the coming season.

The approach feels a little different, but the outcome is likely to remain the same.? At least for now.

Strengths.

The good news is that the Browns continue to have one of the best left tackles in the game.? The bad news is that, even with Joe Thomas doing his job as well as anyone who protects the blind side of a right-handed quarterback, having a cornerstone on the offensive line isn?t a stepping stone to a Super Bowl.? Or, in the Browns? case, a playoff berth.

The Browns also have a solid corps of cornerbacks, with Joe Haden, Sheldon Brown, and Dimitri Patterson anchoring an underrated coverage unit.? Second only to the Steelers in pass defense last season, with 184.9 yards surrendered through the air per game, the Browns know how to avoid getting burned by today?s high-octane offenses.

Receiver Josh Cribbs remains one of the most dangerous return specialists in the game, even though the movement of the kickoff point from the 30 back to the 35 has diminished the value of a quality kick-return ace.? In 2011, Cribbs generated the third highest punt-return average of his seven-year career, and he racked up a career-high 518 receiving yards.? The Browns need him to step up even more on offense, especially if he hopes to stick around beyond the coming season.

Weaknesses.

Though there?s promise at the quarterback position, where 28-year-old rookie Brandon Weeden arrived via the first round of the draft, the depth chart remains an across-the-board liability unless and until Weeden shows he can perform at the NFL level.? The ongoing presence of Colt McCoy serves only to exacerbate the situation; if McCoy is hovering over Weeden?s shoulder as he struggles or if McCoy ends up playing (and, with everyone including McCoy assuming he?ll eventually be benched for Weeden, thriving), the Browns could have another Derek Anderson/Brady Quinn mess.

The Browns? pass defense may have performed so well statistically in 2011 because opponents didn?t need to throw against Cleveland, opting instead to gash them on the ground.? The Browns finished 30th in the league last year in rush defense, giving up 147.4 yards per game.? Bringing in free-agent defensive ends Juqua Parker and Frostee Rucker won?t dramatically help, but it can?t hurt.

It also won?t hurt if defensive tackle Phil Taylor can recover from a torn pectoral muscle sooner rather than later.

Beyond quarterback, the offense features plenty of potential weak spots and, at a minimum, question marks.? Can second-round rookie Mitchell Schwartz step right in and take over for Tony Pashos at right tackle?? Can receiver Greg Little make the kind of leap that will make the Browns feel even better about the Julio Jones trade?? Can receiver Mohamed Massaquoi finally step up?

The biggest concern comes behind rookie tailback Trent Richardson.? With the Browns investing so much in Cleveland?s most-hyped running back since Jim Brown, the Browns had better hope Richardson doesn?t get Ki-Jana Cartered in the preseason.? If Richardson does, guys like Montario Hardesty, Chris Ogbonnaya, and/or Brandon Jackson will need to play the way they should have played to keep the Browns from feeling like they needed to go all in on a dime-a-dozen position.

Changes.

The Browns wisely have hired an offensive coordinator, in the hopes of taking some of the pressure off second-year head coach Pat Shurmur.? He opted for familiarity in former Vikings coach and Eagles offensive coordinator Brad Childress, who did well in the latter job (despite not calling the plays) and not as well in the former.? Childress knows a thing or two about running an offense with a workhorse tailback drawing safeties into the box; the challenge will be to unleash the passing game if/when Richardson becomes what the Browns expect him to be.? In Minnesota, Childress wasn?t able to do that with any quarterback not named Brett Favre.

Richardson has become the star tailback because the guy who was supposed to be the next big thing in Cleveland, Peyton Hillis, took the Madden curse to a new level in 2011.? Obsessed with getting a big contract, Hillis eventually got a one-way ticket to Kansas City, where he found a pot of gold far smaller than he thought he deserved.

On defense, safety Mike Adams has gone to Denver, and ends Juqua Parker and Frostee Rucker beef up a line that could use more of the same.

The most significant change has yet to be officially made.? If the Browns want to get the most out of the 22nd pick in this year?s draft, they need to clear their 2010 third-rounder, Colt McCoy, off the roster.? The sooner it happens, the better off Brandon Weeden will be as he tries to become the first franchise quarterback of the reconstituted Browns franchise.

Camp battles.

The biggest battle shouldn?t be a battle at all.? Brandon Weeden should be installed as the starting quarterback, and Colt McCoy should be shipped elsewhere.? If they can?t trade him, they should just cut him loose.

If McCoy stays, Weeden nevertheless has the inside track on winning the starting job.? Especially since McCoy already has had enough time to audition for the gig ? and has performed just well enough to persuade the Browns to spend a first-round pick on Weeden.

The battle to back up Trent Richardson likely will result in the third-place finisher (Montario Hardesty or Chris Ogbonnaya or Brandon Jackson) getting cut.? Hopefully, the winner will at least get a Water Pik.

On defense, Sheldon Brown may not be able to hold off Dimitri Patterson for a starting cornerback job.? The 33-year-old Brown could still slide back a level, if neither Eric Hagg nor Usama Young can effectively replace Mike Adams at free safety.

Prospects.

A six-game run against teams that either made the playoffs in 2011 or are being picked to get their in 2012 could cause the Browns to yet again fall down in a way that will prevent them from getting up.? It will be critical to at least split with the Bengals in a pair of games played four weeks apart (Week Two and Week Six), and likewise to steal at least one from the Eagles, Bills, Ravens, or Giants.

If the Browns make the trip to Indy on October 21 at 2-4 and beat the Colts to climb to 3-4 with back-to-back home games looming against the Chargers and Ravens before the bye, things could get interesting in mid-November.

It?s unlikely, however, that the Browns will be able to consistently compete in the first season of the Trent Richardson-Brandon Weeden offense.? The goal should be to demonstrate the kind of improvement that won?t cause the Browns to reach for the ?panic? button or the ?reset? button or any button close to either in 2013 and beyond.

It's official: Windows 8 is coming at the end of October

9 hrs.

Microsoft has finally confirmed that Windows 8 will be available to the general public by late October, which is likely when some nice new?tablets will arrive, too.

The timeframe was revealed by?Microsoft's Tami Reller?during the company's?Worldwide Partner Conference in Toronto, Canada on Monday.?(In case you're wondering, the late October release date means that manufacturers will have their hands on Windows 8 at the beginning of August, so that they can get their products ready to go.)

(Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBCUniversal.)

The release date potentially lends some credence to a prior report ??by Bloomberg's Jun Yang and Ian King ??claiming that?Samsung is planning to release a Windows RT tablet in October.

This sounds about right. RT, the tablet-friendly version of Windows 8,?ought to hit shelves around the same time as the full-fledged version, because Microsoft promised to time the release of its own RT tablet, the Surface, with the Windows 8 launch, too.
