A son of Africa returns long-lost treasures

Courtesy of William Holland

Cameroonians marvel over an 18th-century slave shackle that was brought to Africa for a "history lesson" by African-American businessman William Holland, at far left.

By Alan Boyle, Science Editor, NBC News

Decades after they were taken away, African ceremonial masks have been returned to the communities that venerated them, thanks to an African-American family researcher who bought them through eBay.

Georgia businessman William Holland, who has been tracing his roots in West Africa for more than a decade, carried the three masks back with him last month during his latest trek to Cameroon. That's not all he was carrying: Holland also brought relics from the mid-18th century ? the time?when his ancestor was taken from Cameroon, loaded onto a ship, brought to Virginia and sold into slavery.

The masks made a big impression on the hundreds of Cameroonians who gathered for Holland's show-and-tell session. But the slave chains made an even bigger impression.

"When we brought the shackles out, that's when they were about to cry," he said. "They were shocked to see an authentic item that brought so much pain along with it."

Holland's frequent trips to Cameroon's Oku and Nso regions have been a learning experience for him as well as for his long-lost cousins. It took years for Holland to narrow down his approximate place of origin, based on DNA tests as well as a study of American and African pedigrees. Along the way, Holland found out that one of his ancestors was a slave who was pressed into service in the Confederate Army, and that more distant ancestors were members of royal families in Cameroon.

During the buildup to his latest trip, Holland combed through online auction sales, looking for artifacts that could help bridge the gap between the African and American history of his family. He worked with Cameroonian contacts to identify two elephant masks that were associated with the Nso people's secret rituals, plus a wooden mask with a human visage that was used by Oku families during funerals.

The masks were sold out of Africa in the 1970s or 1980s under murky circumstances, and eventually ended up in private hands. "It's almost the same thing as the slave trade," Holland observed. "Outsiders go to a middleman and ask them to get something or someone for them. 'I'm giving you guns, I'm giving you cowrie shells, I'm giving you iron bars. Bring me the people to fill this ship, and I'll give you this.' That's what it reminded me of."

Holland spent hundreds of dollars of his own money to buy the masks, as well as other items such as throwing knives, the wrist and ankle shackles and a "monkey wrench quilt"?? a type of quilt that slaves used to signal each other that it was time to wrap up their tools and get ready for an escape. Then he headed for the Cameroonian towns of Kumbo, Bamenda and Oku.

The Fon of Nso, leader of one of Cameroon's tribal groups, looks on as his aides examine a Cameroonian throwing knife that was purchased on eBay. Some of the aides are looking at a photo of a statue of Ngonnso that was taken from Cameroon to Berlin before 1910. Cameroonian authorities are seeking the statue's return.

William Holland, left, gets his picture taken with Cameroonian Prime Minister Philemon Yunji Yang and Emmanuel Motika, a physics teacher from the Cameroonian town of Bamenda who is an extremely distant relative of Holland.

"It's more than just bringing things back," he explained. "It's a history lesson about those who were taken away during the slave trade. The Cameroonians didn't receive this information in school."

Holland's trip caused a sensation in Cameroon: More than 1,000 townspeople turned out to see the American who was bringing their treasures back. In Cameroon's capital, Yaounde, Holland met the prime minister. Journalists clamored for interviews. "It was crazy," Holland said. "It was a media circus."

The chiefs of the Nso and Oku peoples, who are known as "fons," joined up to give Holland a title that combines two honored names: "Shufaay," a title that is typically given to the Nso noble next in line to the king; and "Bailack," which recognizes Holland's connection to a patriarch who came to Oku from Nso centuries ago. "No Nso son or daughter is allowed to shake hands with a Shufaay again, if they are not of the same status," Holland said. "This goes back to the ancient way of doing things."?

All the attention was great ??but for Holland, the most important result of the trip was the restoration of pieces of African history to their rightful places. Authorities in Kumbo are building a cultural museum that will eventually house the elephant masks and other Nso artifacts. And family members in the Oku region now have the funerary mask they were missing when their loved ones passed away.

The Fon of Oku drew a lesson from Holland's round of eBay diplomacy?? a lesson that's particularly timely for the month of February, recognized in the United States as Black History Month. "He was telling people not to sell these precious things from our society," Holland recalled. "This is wrong. No matter how much money they offer, do not sell."

Holland is already planning his next trip, to the Cameroonian city of Buea in May. He'll be taking over some new history lessons to his ancestral homeland, but he's also hoping to bring back some business: Holland is planning to start up a travel business to put other African-Americans in touch with their roots, and the Africa Travel Association's annual congress in Buea seems like the perfect place for networking.

"I guess you'd call it 'historical tourism,'" Holland said. "Cameroon is really an untapped market for that."

Mikey's Board ? How This Carpet Cleaner Won a Marketing Award

Rob-Anspach-Number-1-Thing-2012

Rob Anspach, owner of?Premiere Carpet Cleaners?in Lancaster, PA, was recently honored by the Business & Entrepreneurs Network for a direct mail marketing campaign that he personally created. ServiceMonster caught up with Rob to find out how he achieved his marketing success, and to see if he had any marketing advice for other carpet cleaners.

1. What are the ?Marketer of the Year Awards?? Are they regional, local, national? Who is eligible?

The ?Marketer of the Year Awards? are held to honor those individuals who excelled in business as a direct result of the marketing they?ve designed and implemented. These particular awards were held in West Chester PA (a suburb of Philadelphia) through The Business and Entrepreneurs Network. The awards were broken down into 3 categories: ?Rookie of the Year,? ?That #1 Thing,? and ?Marketer of the Year.? I was selected as the ?That #1 Thing? winner.

2. Why did you win this award? The?Cleanfax??and?Business & Entrepreneurs Network?articles about your win?say it was for a direct mail letter written in a ?conversational? style, but could you give us more details?

The letter I created was in effect a ?reactivation? letter, designed to bring back clients who hadn?t used our service in over 4 years. It was written to build trust and not to be a typical sales letter. It was more of a conversation between me and the reader, which made it personal and believable.

3. What was the response to your sales letter like?

Unbelievable! You see, I only mailed the letter to around 200 people that hadn?t used our services in over 4 years. These were clients who had spent some money with us in the past, but for some reason or another hadn?t called in a while.

The letters cost less than $200 to print & mail. Within 48 hours of mailing the letter, we booked 3 jobs totaling over $1700, and throughout the month the calls kept coming in. Within 30 days, that letter produced a 32 to 1 ROI (Return on Investment.)

4. What percentage of your marketing is direct (snail mail, BNI meetings, phone calls) vs. indirect (phone book ads, radio ads, or online (social media, websites, etc.))? Which types of marketing have worked best for your business?

I eliminated all phone book ads about seven years ago and haven?t done radio in over a decade. 80% of new and repeat business is generated through direct mail (newsletters, postcards, reminders, reactivation letters & thank you?s) and the other 20% is generated online through our website and social media.

5. Do you use ServiceMonster?s?FMS or DIY marketing programs?to send any of your direct mail?

I have been using FMS through ServiceMonster for many years (I believe since its inception), but I also do follow up?s and sequence mailings to keep people in the loop and the phone ringing.

premier ad

One of Rob?s recent ads.

6. If you had one piece of advice for other carpet cleaners, what would it be?

Raise your prices. If the majority of people who call you say the reason they call is that your prices are great?it?s a good indicator your prices are too low.

7.?Premiere Carpet Cleaners?has been in business for 18 years. How has your marketing strategy evolved over time?

When I first started in business, I had no clue how to market and relied on others to design ads and marketing materials. And for three years all I did was give money away to ad reps who designed ads that never compelled anyone (well, except those without money) to call me. So, I took matters into my own hands and started creating my own ads.

Back then I did a lot of Clipper Magazine and newspapers coupons, which generated good responses, but as I got more focused on the types of clientele I wanted to serve, my marketing took a shift. You see, I realized my service wasn?t designed for everybody, and as much I wanted to help, there were certain customers that didn?t make a good fit. Instead of blasting my ads out to everyone, I focused on getting my message directly to a precise customer that valued my services and was willing to pay my prices.

8. You also do marketing consulting and write marketing articles. Where can people access your marketing advice? Do you write for any industry publications?

I?ve written many articles for Cleanfax Magazine and have been working with Bruce DeLoatch on co-editing The Monitor, a publication of the Society for Cleaning & Restoration Technicians (SCRT). On occasion I have been known to pop in and teach social media marketing at Jeff Cross? Totally Booked University. My next class will take place on March 7 at Jon-Don in Langhorne, PA.

If you?d like to know more about me or how to kick your marketing into high gear you can visit me at?www.robanspach.com.

9. Could you tell us more about your carpet cleaning business?

I started?Premiere Carpet Cleaners?in 1995 thinking I could win the world (at least my little part of it) over with cheaper prices and fast service. After 6 months, I realized very quickly that offering cheap service was making me broke. The moment I started raising prices was the day I actually felt I was in business to make money.

I added a janitorial service to our services in 1996 and a flooring store in 1997. The flooring store was a complete flop and cost me more money than I liked to admit, but it taught me a valuable lesson. If you try to be everything to everyone, you won?t be good at anything. So by focusing on our core services (carpet, area rug, upholstery & mattress cleaning) we are able to make money and keep our clients happy.

10. Anything you?d like to add?

Test everything! Look at what others are doing in their marketing (not just cleaners), look at the plumbers, the lawyers, the realtors . . . look at everything then use it for your marketing. Test it! Don?t be afraid to make a mistake?that?s how you?ll learn to be a better marketer.

U.K. lasagna products recalled for 60 percent horsemeat

By Cassandra Vinograd
Associated Press

Some beef lasagna products recalled from British stores contained more than 60 percent horsemeat, U.K. food safety authorities said Thursday. It was the latest revelation in a growing scandal surrounding the use of horsemeat and the mislabeling of meat products in Europe.?

Frozen-food company Findus recalled the beef lasagna meals earlier this week after French supplier Comigel raised concerns that the products didn't "conform to specification." The U.K. Food Standards Agency said the lasagnas were tested as part of an ongoing investigation into mislabeled meat.

Already this month, millions of burgers have been taken off shop shelves as it emerged that beef products from three companies in Ireland and Britain contained horse DNA.

Eighteen beef lasagna products were tested by Findus, which found that 11 contained horsemeat in the 60 to 100 percent range, the Food Standards Agency said. It would not say if any of the meals were 100 percent horsemeat.

The agency said there's no evidence yet of a food safety risk, but added that tests have been ordered on the lasagna to see if it contains the veterinary drug phenylbutazone. Animals treated with phenylbutazone are not allowed to enter the food chain because it may pose a risk to human health, the agency added.

People who had purchased the meals were advised not to eat them but to return the products to the shops they were bought from.

Eating horsemeat is not generally a health risk, but the recent incidents have triggered disgust in Britain and Ireland, where horsemeat is not traditionally eaten. They also have raised fears over food security and labeling along the supply chain.

The revelations have shaken Ireland in particular, because beef exports are a key industry. Irish government officials and an Irish meat company have blamed meat imported from Poland, but Polish authorities say they have found no evidence backing those claims.

Findus UK apologized to customers and said it was confident it has "full resolved" the supply-chain issue. "We understand this it is a very sensitive subject for consumers and we would like to reassure you we have reacted immediately," the company said.

Catherine Brown, chief executive of the U.K. Food Standards Agency, said that following its investigations into Findus, the agency is demanding more comprehensive meat testing from the food business "in order to demonstrate that the food it sells and serves is what it says it is on the label."

"We are demanding that food businesses conduct authenticity tests on all beef products, such as beef burgers, meatballs and lasagna, and provide the results to the FSA. The tests will be for the presence of significant levels of horsemeat," she said in a statement.

Comigel earlier this week had advised Findus ? and the store chain Aldi ? to remove frozen beef lasagna from store shelves. Supermarket chain Tesco also decided to withdraw its spaghetti bolognese, which was produced by Comigel.?

A Closer Look At MusclePharm - Seeking Alpha

In my article of January 16 I already mentioned a new star on the horizon. This company is called MusclePharm (MSLP.OB).

Last week, Miami Beach billionaire entrepreneur Dr. Phillip Frost invested $1.4 million in Muscle Pharm Corp and yesterday the company successfully completed the final closing of a $12.0 million registered direct offering of its Series D Convertible Preferred Stock.

The Frost Group, LLC, headed by Miami entrepreneur Dr. Phillip Frost, was the lead investor in the offering and elected to increase its previously announced investment in the offering to a total of $2.9 million. The nutritional supplement maker closed a $4.1 million offering of Series D Convertible Preferred stock, including the investment by The Frost Group. The stock was issued at $8 per share, convertible into two shares of common stock.

Dr. Phillip Frost made his fortune selling drug manufacturer Ivax to Teva Pharmaceuticals for $7.6 billion in 2005. A former dermatology professor, he got his start in pharma in the early seventies, when he took over Key Pharmaceuticals with partner Michael Jaharis to develop generic pharmaceuticals and veterinary products. They sold out to Schering-Plough in 1986. Frost went on to found Ivax. He also has stakes in more than a half dozen firms, including medical device company SafeStitch. Frost is an active trader, and holds stakes in several public companies. One of his biggest stakes is in vaccine-maker Opko Health (OPK), where he also serves as a CEO.

MusclePharm

The company develops, markets and sells athlete-focused, high quality nutritional supplements primarily to specialty resellers. MusclePharm's products have been formulated to enhance active fitness regimens, including muscle building, weight loss and maintaining general fitness. Their nutritional supplements are available for purchase in over 10,500 U.S. retail outlets, including Dick's Sporting Goods, GNC, Vitamin Shoppe and Vitamin World. Products are also sold to over 100 online channels, including bodybuilding.com, amazon.com, gnc.com and vitacost.com. Internationally, the company's nutritional supplements are sold in over 110 countries.

The company started formulating their nutritional supplements in 2008 for consumption by active individuals, high performance athletes and fitness enthusiasts. In late 2008 they launched sales and marketing programs through their internal sales executives and staff targeting specialty retail distributors.

The company's wide-range variety of nutritional supplements, include Assault?, Combat Powder?, MusclePharm Musclegel?, MusclePharm Shred Matrix?, and Re-Con?. These products are comprised of amino acids, herbs, and proteins tested by scientists for the overall health of athletes. The company developed these nutritional supplements to enhance the effects of workouts, repair muscles, and nourish the body for optimal physical fitness.

MusclePharm's primary growth strategy is to:

  • increase product distribution and sales through increased market penetrations both domestically and internationally;
  • increase margins by focusing on streamlining operations and seeking operating efficiencies in all areas of operations;
  • continue to conduct additional testing of the safety and efficacy of MusclePharm's products and formulate new products; and
  • increase awareness of MusclePharm's products by increasing marketing and branding opportunities through endorsements, sponsorships and brand extensions.

The company's core marketing strategy is to brand MusclePharm as the "must have" fitness brand for workout enthusiasts and elite athletes. MusclePharm seeks to be known as the "athlete's company," run by athletes who create their products for other athletes, both professional and otherwise.

Industry Overview

The company operates within the large and growing U.S. nutritional supplements industry. According to Nutrition Business Journal's 2012 Supplement Business Report, the industry generated over $30 billion in sales in 2011 and $28.1 billion in 2010, and is projected to grow at an average annual rate of approximately 6.0% through 2020.

According to the same Journal, sports nutrition products represented approximately 12% of the total sales in the U.S. nutritional supplements industry in 2011, and the category is expected to grow at a 9.1% compound annual growth rate (or CAGR) from 2012 to 2020, representing the fastest growing product category in the nutritional supplements industry.

MusclePharm believes there are several key demographic, healthcare and lifestyle trends driving the continued growth of the industry.

These trends include:

Increasing awareness of nutritional supplements across major age and lifestyle segments of the U.S. population. We believe that awareness of the benefits of nutritional supplements is growing among active, younger populations, providing the foundation for the future consumer base. In addition, the average age of the U.S. population is increasing and data from the United States Census Bureau indicates that the number of Americans age 65 or older is expected to increase by approximately 36% from 2010 to 2020. We believe that these consumers are likely to increasingly use nutritional supplements and generally have higher levels of disposable income to pursue healthier lifestyles.

Increased focus on fitness and healthy living. We believe that consumers are trying to lead more active lifestyles and become increasingly focused on healthy living, nutritional and supplemental. According to the Nutrition Business Journal's 2012 Supplement Business Report, 20% of the U.S. adult population (or 47 million people) were regular or heavy users of vitamins in 2011. We believe that growth in our industry will continue to be driven by consumers who increasingly embrace health and wellness as an important part of their lifestyles.

The company's products

The company currently offers 20 athlete-focused, high quality nutritional supplement products and are comprised of amino acids, herbs and proteins tested by the company's recognized scientists, and intended to be safe and effective for the overall health of athletes. Competition

Participants in the vitamin industry include specialty retailers, supermarkets, drugstores, mass merchants, multi-level marketing organizations, online retailers, mail-order companies and a variety of other small participants. The nutritional supplements sold through these channels are divided into four major product categories: vitamins, minerals and health supplements; sports nutrition products; diet products; and other wellness products. Most supermarkets, drugstores and mass merchants have narrow nutrition supplement product offerings limited primarily to simple vitamins and herbs, with less knowledgeable sales associates than specialty retailers.

Competition is based primarily on quality and assortment of products, marketing support, and availability of new products. Currently, the main competitors are three private companies: Optimum Nutrition, Inc., or Optimum, Iovate Health Sciences, Inc., or IHS, and Bio-Engineered Supplements and Nutrition, Inc., or BSN. Optimum is a wholly owned subsidiary of Glanbia Nutritionals, Inc., an international nutritional ingredients group. Optimum owns and operates two brands of nutritional supplements (Optimum Nutrition and American Body Building), providing a line of products across multiple categories. IHS is a nutritional supplement company that delivers a range of products to the nutritional marketplace.

The retail market for nutritional supplements is characterized by a few dominant national companies, including GNC, Vitamin World, Vitamin Shoppe, and Great Earth Vitamin Stores. Four companies dominate the online channel-bodybuilding.com, vitamins.com (owned by Puritan's Pride), GNC.com and vitaminshoppe.com, the latter two having retail sales locations as well.

Major competitors in the sports nutrition and weight-loss markets consist of companies such as EAS, Inc., Weider Nutrition International, Inc. and Twinlab Corporation.

The company also competes with a number of large direct selling firms selling nutritional, diet, health, personal care and environmental products, and numerous small competitors. The principal direct selling competitors are Amway Corporation, Nature's Bounty, Inc., Sunrider Corporation, New Vision USA, Inc., Herbalife International of America, Inc., USANA, Inc., and Melaleuca, Inc.

An official listing on a major stock exchange is not far away, if you search through the filings.

The major reasons for the increase in our general and administrative expenses were: approximately $3.1 million in increased advertising and promotions due to our increased levels of sales activities (which included approximately $1.4 million in increased product sponsorships and athlete endorsement costs); approximately $1.5 million in increased salaries and benefits expenses due to our overall significantly higher level of sales; approximately $1.4 million from increased professional fees due primarily to significant activity required to obtain financings, resolve disputes and restate certain prior period financial statements, as well as increased fees due for overall increased levels of activities and preparing to seek an exchange listing for our common stock; approximately $1.2 million in investment advisory costs due to two consulting contracts that require us to issue 8.4% of our common stock on an ongoing, fully diluted basis; and other increases in general administrative expenses of approximately $2.1 million (including $0.5 million in stock compensation, $0.2 million in depreciation, and $0.2 million in travel). The total increase in general and administrative costs was offset by decreases in research and development costs of approximately $0.3 million and company support of $0.1 million.

Fundamentals

From a fundamental view I find it hard to predict profitability in the short term. I think the company has to optimize their cash flow first and cut some expenses that are not necessary to run a strong brand.

Source: SA article

Conclusion

International sales will be a significant part of MusclePharm's sales for the foreseeable future. From an European distributor I heard that MusclePharm's products are very popular, especially in the U.S. and Latin America. It's a trusted brand that consumers love.

The company's stock appreciated already from $4.02 to $6.30, but this could be just the beginning.

Trading has never been so easy because of Mr. Frost's participation.

Disclosure: I have no positions in any stocks mentioned, but may initiate a long position in MSLP.OB over the next 72 hours. I wrote this article myself, and it expresses my own opinions. I am not receiving compensation for it (other than from Seeking Alpha). I have no business relationship with any company whose stock is mentioned in this article. (More...)

The Four Relationships That Are Essential To GREAT Video ...

Four relationships
Video can be a lot of things ? fun, exciting, engaging, entertaining, suspenseful, and revealing. But each of these adjectives point to the one aspect of video that makes it such a powerful medium ? communication.?Communication is both the foundation and the result of great video.

A Great Video Is A Great Communicator While A Poor Video Is A Poor Communicator

Why spend all that time working through a Creative Brief? To make sure we?re communicating to the right audience. But to know what that audience really wants, we have to listen to and relate to them. So realizing the importance of relationships in bringing stories to life should come as no surprise.

Merriam-Webster says relationships are ?interrelated, connecting, or binding?. While we?ve written before about the qualities of great relationships, today I wanted to focus on the four relationships that are essential to GREAT video:

Client Relationships

This is probably the relationship that first comes to mind. It?s obvious. Our ability to hear, listen to and understand clients is foundational to our ability to deliver content that is on-message and on-target. While we all want ?good? clients we have to be ?good? providers- we have to BE what we seek. That means we do what we say, we follow through, we?re good to our word, and we have our client?s best interest in mind. Ultimately, we can only succeed when and if our clients succeed.

Staff Relationships

The relationships with the team(s) we work with every day is equally important to our success and the success of our clients. For those of us who are leaders, we must not only?lead our teams, but we must also focus on choosing the right people for our team. By right I mean more than skill; I mean character, heart, discipline, and focus ? which are equally vital. I love it when a client sends me a note, out of the blue, about how great their experience was with one of our team members. It?s a reminder that staff relationships are one of our greatest assets and abilities to delivering great video!

Crew Relationships

Our crew is an extension of our company. Communication with these folks is important because they are the ?boots on the ground? ? the ones that lend their skills and expertise to bringing our projects to life. Because of that we want them to be on the same page when it comes to a project?s purpose, objective, look, and feel. We want them to have our client?s best interest in mind. If our crew sees our project as just ?another job?, we probably won?t realize the kinds of synergies that bring so much life to those projects.

Self Relationships

There?s one more relationship that I want to highlight and that?s the relationship with yourself. I know, it may sound a little odd, but it has everything to do with your ability to examine yourself in honest, healthy ways. You probably know your strengths, but have you faced your weaknesses? If so, what are you doing about them? The truth is we all have to honestly face those painful realities of who we are, without excuses, and resist the temptation to ignore, put off, and procrastinate dealing with them in hopes that they will ?just go away?. Your relationship with you is foundational to the health of all of your other relationships.

Relationships are a two-way street. Not every client, staff, or crew member can or will understand the importance of or be interested in pursing mutually beneficial relationships. In his book, Necessary Endings: The Employees, Businesses, and Relationships That All of Us Have to Give Up in Order to Move Forward, Dr. Henry Cloud has a chapter title ?which sums it all up pretty well, The Wise, the Foolish, and the Evil: Identifying Which Kinds of People Deserve Your Trust. In other words, choose your relationships carefully.

Each of these four relationships have to be more than just lip service, they must be genuine. Superficially ?putting up? with a relationship is not genuine. To the best of your ability, it?s important to strengthen, nurture, and make every effort to develop healthy relationships with the people you work with ? life?s too short not to.
